You know what I love? Looking back and realizing oh yes, you really did just put AU!Jiroshin in charge of babysitting tiny!Goku and ickle!Sanzo. Kory is ten and would shoot me a Glare of Death for implying that he is in any way ickle.

Remix: NOW IT CAN BE REVEALED. [May. 31st, 2010|09:37 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

[personal profile] andmydog wrote my Remix, and it's here, so if you're one of those people who don't read fic until you've got a name attached, go read it.

And now, because I've wanted to talk about this story FOREVER, are this year's notes on Remix. My story is here. It's Goku and Sanzo, and love, and death.

Meta, or liner notes, or whatever, below the cut )

The Archive of Our Own is looking for feedback from fanartists on what they want on an archive! If you're a fanartist, please take a look.

In case you haven't heard via [info]glass_icarus or [info]ithiliana, [info]fiction_theory has a great post on what art is, and what it costs, and how Amanda Palmer is not Erykah Badu. Interesting stuff, and a great post. I'm still chewing over everything brought up.

Via just about everyone but especially [info]medize and [info]lindentreeisle, the video of American soldiers killing civilians in Baghdad, via WikiLeaks, which worked like hell to get it exposed to the public. I'm not sure what to say beyond this is what happens. This is war, and it's ugly and horrible and I don't think there's ever been a conflict, ever, where shit like this doesn't happen. So when you go to war, this is what happens. USA, try not to forget-- again-- this time.

More fic, and a meme! [Apr. 2nd, 2010|03:38 pm]
[Tags|, , , , ]

In celebration of my [info]springkink fics getting done:

Ask me a question about one of my fics -- characters, plot, what happened before or after, what the writing process was like, what scenes I cut or changed, other ways the fic could have gone, relevant bits of backstory/headcanon/worldbuilding, what a certain line or scene meant or was in reference to, what various characters were doing offscreen.

And if you haven't seen them, the last two fics are both Saiukyi:

Goku and Hakkai

Hazel and Gat

[Current Mood | cheerful]

Today is not that day. On the upside, my victim lucky mixer for [info]apocabigbang now has over 11K of fic to plow through. And I think I'm going to post a Weiss story tomorrow that's essentially been finished for months 'cause it's close the fuck enough.

If you're thinking of signing up for Remix and you write Naruto, chime in over here, please! (As long as you qualify.) And btw, you should totally be thinking of signing up for Remix; it's awesome.

Go read Asian Women Blog Carnival #5: who i am when i'm (not) with you. I've read some amazing stuff so far.

An analysis of all the ways Google Buzz went wrong. Also awesome.

And last but not least, a question for AO3 users and readers-- if you, like me, had a series of stories that could be read in chronological order, but were not particularly bound to that-- like, say, the Ran-verse-- would you post it as a chaptered fic, or related stories, or...what? Any ideas/recommendations?

The abused kids of fandom and you (warning, meta ahead) [Feb. 9th, 2010|09:58 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[Current Mood | thoughtful]

I am at my word count in [info]apocabigbang (yay!) and have several sections where ((SOMETHING VERY IMPORTANT GOES HERE, POSSIBLY EXPLOSIONS.)) (Not so yay.)

So of course, I'm thinking about stuff totally unrelated to the end of the world, at least on that macro level.

[info]jaina and I had this discussion about how much Orihime and Gojyo had in common (redheads with self-esteem problems, protective brothers, and bad parents for the win), and I started thinking about all the Abused Kids of Fandom. Holy smokes the list is long.

When I was rewatching Gravitation, two things really stuck out at me: The series seemed much better than it was on the first watch because it was such a blessed relief from Neon Genesis Evangelion, and how logically Yuki was behaving at times if you kept his PTSD in mind. Suichi gets beat up, Yuki flips the fuck out. ("Oh," I thought, "triggers!")

I remember back in the day, people in Sentinel fandom would give Blair this Big Angsty Abusive Storyline, and it kind of cracks me up that dude-- a lot of us have Big Angsty Abusive Storylines, and no one in my circle writes them. (To be fair, they weren't the same people who were making the storylines up in the first place....)

Mostly when I write about them I background the abuse and don't think about it much; it's part of them and who they are, but it's not the focus of the story. But it is a huge part of them and who they are. Kenren's differences from Gojyo are not so much due to personality-- I think in a lot of ways he and Gojyo are 'closest' in nature-- but due to the way Gojyo was raised. When I was writing The Other Side, what happened to Jin's sisters and mother (TB) was so different in nature than what happened to his family in canon (raised by an abusive mother and a brother who did his best to protect him)-- and there's just this gulf. They still have this core personality, but it changes so much. And so it's this dance between recognizing it and not wanting (for me, anyway) to not fall into cheap rhetorical tricks.

So how do you deal with your abused characters? Do you feel like you have to work harder to be fair to them, or do you just try to treat them like any character with weaknesses, flaws, and backstories?

[info]karayan and [info]inarticulate let me know there's another round of FUCK YOU, SHE'S AWESOME going around. Yay!

Here's the last time I did it, when it was just a simple list of ten. This time I'm going to do five but with explanations. I am value-added, yo. If you disagree with my assessment of anyone's awesomeness, bitch about it in your own damn journal, not mine. (I suspect y'all already know this, but I've seen it in others' journals, so.)

I have posts to write. So instead, I meme.

From [info]toxictattoo and [info]threewalls:

Comment with a character of mine, i.e. one that I have written about or have an interest in.

Receive three bits of trivia about their sexuality: practices, preferences, experiences, fantasies, kinks, etc. (Which may or may not agree with each other.)

Profit! or at least entertainment.

[Current Mood | satisfied]

If there is one person or more on your friends list who makes your world a better place just because they exist, and who you would not have met (in real life or not) without the Internet, then post this same sentence in your journal.

Yeah, yeah. And a new one from [info]meganbmoore!

List 10 (or however many) platonic male/female relationships in fiction that you enjoy. My attempt at rules:

1. They interact in canon, preferably in a significant (apply your own interpretation of such) way.
2. They are not related. They can, however, view each other as surrogate family.
3. Neither has confessed or implied romantic love for the other in canon.
4. They have not dated, been married, had sex, or made out in canon, on purpose, and over their own free will.
5. A popular fanon ship is ok (though preferably not your ship) but a canon pairing you wish were just friends is out.
6. Try to avoid using the same character or series twice.
7. They don’t have to be friends.

I am also trying to avoid 'will they/won't they' ships.

These are not in any particular order, aside from #1.

1. Modesty Blaise and Willie Garvin, Modesty Blaise books and comics. NUMBER ONE WITH A BULLET. The saddest story in the world is that there's actually a Modesty movie out there with Terrence Stamp-- Terrence Stamp, people! as Willie...and it sucks. THERE IS NO JUSTICE.

The rest of the list )

Edited because HTML can suck it.

I haven't watched the latest episode or, er, the episode before that. Nonetheless, have yourself some SPN meta.

So here's the thing. That damn book of Supernatural essays started me thinking meta.

Y'all know this way lies madness.

And honestly, I'm sure someone else has said this, somewhere, but SPN fandom scares me, so here we go!

Dean and his issues with women. )

This owes a bit of a debt to "Dean Winchester: Bad-Ass...or Soccer Mom?" by Tanya Michaels, from In the Hunt, which I reviewed here.

1. Wow, [info]karose, that Speed Racer movie sure was slashy. I think I'm gonna watch it again to see Rain bite his lip. Also, if there is An Association to Give Christina Ricci A Sandwich, I would like to join it.

2. Nifty article with [info]sartorias, aka Sherwood Smith, here.

3. In case you haven't already seen this, the Thousand-Hand Guan Yin performed by a troupe of Deaf Chinese dancers.

4. [info]lindentreeisle is correct. The GI Joe movie looks stupid. If you don't believe me, I have one word: Supersuits. Yeah, I don't get it either.

5. Gay marriage is looking good in Maine! US NEW ENGLANDERS WILL TAKE OVER THE WORLD, YO.

6. Am working on several fics and two short stories at once. Seems to be the only way I make progress on any of them. Am well aware this proves I am insane.

Manga, we loves it. [Feb. 22nd, 2009|08:56 pm]
[Tags|, , , , ]
[Current Mood | pensive]

Today's Saiyuki statement: HAKKAI FUCK YEAH. Probably more later.

I have the second volume of Kyou Kara Maoh! Where Gwendal HEROICALLY SAVES A KITTEN and is compared to a Godfather character. And Yozak is there, mostly naked and with very few lines! We get to meet him properly next volume, I assume. The manga is way more Conrad/Yuuri-y than the anime. I am choosing to JUST IGNORE IT JESUS CHRIST CONRAD.

More reason for people to complain about official translations: In the "meet the characters" page, most of the captions are completely fuxxored. It's actually pretty funny.

Anyway! It got me thinking a little bit, because Yuuri goes off on his 'MY NATION ONLY USES DEFENSE' speech and I, as always, start giggling, because YEAH, HISTORY OF JAPAN here, but that's not really fair to Yuuri. Because he's grown up in a world where that is how Japan works, and has worked for many years and my country's been at war for years now and it's interesting to think that Yuuri just experience of that. One of my friends from the former Yugoslavia was saying it makes her sad that kids now will literally grow up not knowing the country she grew up in. And this is, I guess, the positive side of that, that Yuuri has grown up differently. And I assume that-- light comic work that this is-- the author was thinking of that when she created Yuuri.

Temari Matsumoto, the mangaka, says she likes drawing Gunter best. She keeps doing awesome things with his hair that crack me up.

There's a somewhat akward but cute prose story at the end about the boys on the cruise ship. Wolfram, as always, gets the best line.

"Water buffalo, Duck?" "I tire of saying 'small horse.'" [Feb. 22nd, 2009|02:42 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[Current Mood | cheerful]

I am watching NCIS, and it occurs to me that the reason I unabashedly love this show-- well, this is one reason, anyway-- is that it's not afraid to call characters out on their bullshit. All of them. Michael Weatherly plays a guy (Tony) who's a bit of a dick, and they call him on it. In today's episode (well, the one on right now), a supermodel on a reality show just died, and the team is trying as a group to keep him away from the other two supermodels. Because they are awesome.

Also, the show is funny.

Tony: My dad cut me off [financially] when I was twelve; I had to earn all my dates the old-fashioned way.
Ziva: Begging?

But anyway, the reason I'm posting is that this is such a nice change from a lot of TV-- think 24, large sections of the Jossverse, and goddamned Supernatural, where character flaws like calling women whores are dismissed as Cute Quirks and hunches are always right, at least if they're hunches by the right characters. (Buffy's Slayer-Sense is an exception to this, as it's canon.) In contrast, in NCIS even Gibbs-- the experienced, brilliant father-figure to the crew-- can be wrong, and will get called on it, and they will-- I know, it's crazy!-- learn and change from it.

I'm not super-fond of the military setting, and it's episodic enough I don't make it appointment TV, but sometimes I find myself wishing I could take the cast and port them to a different show.

...okay, now I want to write the NCIS team hunting vampires. Oh dear.
